The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - Stieg Larsson (Millenium I)

I'm probably the last one who read these famous books that everyone has already talked about ages ago. But still I want to give my opinion on it.

The main characters are Mikael Blomkvist, editor of the 'Millenium' magazine, Lisbeth Salander, investigator for a security company and Henrik Vanger, retired head of the 'Vanger cooperation'.
It's not until quite far into the book that we find out about how these three are connected and I think the main reason for that is that Larsson took his time to build the story carefully. That slowed it down in the beginning but when the story really started I couldn't put the book down.

The plot is amazingly complex and it seems to me that the author tried to include as many details as possible which created a surprisingly convincing thriller.
Some aspects about the storyline rather surprised me for example when there was a really violent scene included and I noticed that that part of the story could easily have been left out. But on the other hand it makes me think that I wouldn't have got to know one of the characters as well if that scene hadn't been in this book.
Additionally it helps build the atmosphere which by the way I would have liked a bit more dark than it was. What I mean is that a crime taking place in the Swedish winter would be far more impressive than one committed on a sunny summer day.

Still there were times when I sat there with my eyes wide so the events deinitely got to me.

The only part that I absolutely disliked was the epilogue. It felt a bit like when you're watching Romeo and Juliet and you know that there are 4 acts. But Romeo and Juliet both already die in the middle of act three so that makes you wonder what will happen for the rest of the play.
To me the story felt finished about 50 pages before the ending and I almost completely skipped the epilogue. Larsson just explained the outcome of an aspect in this book that I wasn't interested in that much and that is a kind of financial crime.
For someone who is into this topic the last bit of the book will be very pleasant but it was rather boring for me.

Apart from this I really very much enjoyed the book although I think that it will take a while until I can get myself to read the sequel.
I guess I will just have to wait until I have forgotten what I didn't like.

Ein neues Zuhause für meine Bücher!

Es ist endlich soweit, heute präsentiere ich mein Bücherregal:

Ich bin noch nicht ganz zufrieden mit der Anordnung der Bücher, und auch, dass in der oberen Hälfte so viel Platz ist, stört mich. Große Lust, nur wegen einem zusätzlichen Regalbrett noch einmal zum Möbelhaus (bei dem natürlich keiner weiß, um welches es sich hier handelt) zu fahren, habe ich eigentlich nicht.

Erstmal bin ich aber überglücklich, dass ich jetzt immer alle meine Schätze in Reich- und Sichtweite habe.

Und wie man sieht, habe ich sogar noch ein wenig Platz für Nachschub.

28 Tage lang - David Safier

Dies ist das nächste Buch für die Bücherchallenge 20/14, denn damit habe ich Aufgabe #6 erfüllt, ein Buch von einem noch nicht vorher gelesenen Autor.
Und ich bin mir jetzt schon sicher, dass dieses Buch mein absolutes Monats-Highlight wird, obwohl wir nicht einmal die Mitte des Monats erreicht haben.

Es hat mich einfach total überrascht, denn von David Safier kennt man ja normalerweise etwas Anderes. Dabei muss ich sagen, dass er durchaus auch Bücher schreiben kann, die einen nicht  nur zum Lachen bringen sollen, denn er hat in mir Entsetzen und Trauer auslösen können.

Es geht um die 16-jährige Mira, die zusammen mir ihrer Mutter und ihrer kleinen Schwester im Warschauer Ghetto lebt und dort um das tägliche Überleben kämpft. Als dann die Deutschen beginnen, alle Juden des Ghettos nach und nach "umzusiedeln", muss sie sich entscheiden, was für ein Mensch sie sein möchte.
Eigentlich ist das schon alles, was ich über die Handlung sagen möchte, denn es ist meiner Meinung nach einfach schade, dass der Klappentext viel mehr verrät. Am meisten Spaß macht das Lesen nun einmal, wenn man die Geschichte selbst erlebt.

Den Charakter Mira fand ich sehr greifbar und authentisch, denn obwohl sie die Aufgabe übernommen hat, für ihre Familie zu sorgen, ist sie alles andere als erwachsen.
Ich konnte ihre Angst spüren und ausnahmsweise kam ich damit klar, dass die Protagonistin 16 Jahre alt ist, was ja regelrecht zum guten Ton in Jugendbüchern gehört. Normalerweise bin ich von der Naivität und Kindlichkeit genervt, die die meisten Mädchen in Büchern an den Tag legen.

Auch die anderen wichtigen Persönlichkeiten in diesem Buch habe ich in mein Herz geschlossen und die ganze Geschichte hat mich berührt, weshalb ich sie wirklich jedem empfehlen kann.

Ganz besonders fasziniert hat mich das immer wieder auftauchende Motiv der eigenen Person, dass man sich entscheiden muss, was man tun soll, was das für Folgen hätte und ob man der Mensch sein möchte, der man dann wäre.
Denn oft bekommt man zu hören, dass die Deutschen keine andere Wahl hatten, als die Juden zu hassen und sie zu verfolgen, denn sonst wären sie selbst ja ins Visier der SS geraten.
In "28 Tage lang" wird die Frage aufgeworfen, ob nicht jeder immer eine Wahl hat, egal wie aussichtslos die Situation ist. Ob es nicht besser wäre, sich selbst zu opfern, als bis zum Tod mit den eigenen Taten leben zu müssen.

Das einzige, was mich ein wenig stört, ist das Cover, denn ich finde, es hat schon seine Berechtigung, dass die meisten Bücher über die NS-Zeit in schwarz-weiß gehalten sind. Es unterstützt die Stimmung der Bücher zusätzlich, was mir hier leider fehlt.

Alles in allem aber ein überaus gelungenes Buch und wenn es nach mir ginge, könnte Herr Safier mehr Bücher dieser Art schreiben.

Der Medicus - Noah Gordon

"Der Medicus" ist ein Buch, das mich bis vor kurzem gar nicht gereizt hat, denn es ist ein historischer Roman. Die Geschichte beginnt im England des elften Jahrhunderts und dreht sich um Robert Cole, der im Alter von neun Jahren verwaist. Er muss sich von dem Zeitpunkt an alleine durchschlagen und findet schnell Gefallen an der Heilkunst. Rob möchte ein Arzt werden, aber in dieser Zeit war das gar nicht so einfach, ohne Universitäten und unter den strengen Aufsicht der Kirche.

Aber das ist noch längst nicht die ganze Geschichte und die Vielfältigkeit dieses Romans hat mich von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite fasziniert. Einblicke in das Judentum, in das Reich Persiens und in die Schwierigkeiten des Heilens zu einer Zeit, als niemand eine menschliche Leiche sezieren durfte, machen dieses Buch zu etwas ganz Besonderem.

Ich kann eindeutig sagen, dass dieses Werk mich begeistert zurückgelassen hat und es ist definitiv ein Monats-Highlight mit großen Chancen auf den Thron am Ende des Jahres.

Die Charaktere sind vielschichtig und so greifbar, dass ich fast meinte, sie persönlich zu kennen und ich hätte ohne einen Hauch von Langeweile noch weitere 600 Seiten in der Welt von Noah Gordon verbringen können.

Zugegeben, im Alter von 12 Jahren sollte man den "Medicus" wirklich nicht lesen, denn er ist durchaus nicht frei von Erotik, Grausamkeit und Gewalt aber es hat die Geschichte für mich noch wertvoller gemacht. Gordon hat eine einzigartige Atmosphäre geschaffen, die eine unglaubliche Sogwirkung entwickelt.

Ich muss aber auch sagen, dass ich innerlich gestöhnt habe, als mit klar wurde, dass der Großteil des Buches in Persien spielt, da diese Gegend mir in Büchern bisher nicht besonders gefallen hat. Aber hier war ich sehr positiv überrascht, Noah Gordon konnte mir die Gegend wieder schmackhaft machen.

Ausnahmsweise schließe ich mich der allgemeinen Meinung an, denn dies ist wirklich ein Bestseller, der seinen Namen auch verdient hat und ihn mit Stolz tragen kann.

The Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

Just another dysotpian series?

We have been overflooded with dystopian novels and series and I haven't read many of them, I didn't get as addicted to them as a lot of others.
The only other series out of the young adult genre that I have read is the 'Hunger Games' series by Suzanne Collins but after that I didn't pick up any other book out of the same genre. That is because I have to say that I was a bit disappointed.
I really liked the first book, the second one wasn't quite as good and the third one didn't satisfy me at all.

It was a bit different with the 'Divergent' series as the first book didn't absorb me as much as the 'Hunger Games' whereas the second book was a lot better.

Today I finished 'Allegiant' and I think it will be last dystopian book I will read for some time because the finale couldn't convince me. Although I have to admit that the author made decisions that I didn't expect in the young adult genre. There were twists that I didn't see coming but it's not a story that will stay in my mind for a long time.

All that put aside I do think that the books can get readers to love them who are a bit younger than me and I can really recommend them even if I'm practically the last one to read them.
Maybe I've just grown out of the young adult stories.

1Q84 - Haruki Murakami

Yes, I did it! I finally finished this monster book.
It has been such a long time since I've last read such a big book, probably over two years and I wonder why it has taken me so long to do so. I noticed that I quite enjoy reading books with at least 600 pages as it allows me to really dive into the story.

But now about the content.
I have to admit that I bought this book without knowing what's awaiting me and I didn't know for a long time even reading it.
People kept asking me what it was about and I had to keep answering that I didn't know which caused a lot of confusion by the way ('How can you buy a book without even knowing what it's about?').

Anynway, 1Q84 is narrated by two protagonists, Aomame and Tengo who live in Japan. They went to primary school together but then lost track of each other.
In 1984, when the story takes place, they both are 29 years old and spend their days mostly on their own but their lives are somehow interconnected.
All of a sudden the world doesn't seem to be the same anymore and they find them themselves in the middle of something surreal, something very dangerous.
They both fight for themselves to survive in this new, different world but for some reason they can't forget about each other. Although they haven't met since they have been ten years old.

The first chapters this book seemed to tell a totally normal story and it felt like reality.
But then all of a sudden Haruki Murakami throws surreal occurences at you and when I was about 200 pages in I just sat there with my mouth open.
I don't want to say anything about what happens because everyone should have the chance to be as amazed as I was.

Despite the book being so big it didn't feel like a long time reading it because mostly it was fast-paced and exciting so I just had to keep reading. I haven't read this much of a book in one day for a very long time.
The plot just absolutely absorbed me and especially the ending was totally satisfying.

I have to say that there isn't much left that can surprise me in a book but 1Q84 did it all the time.

Haruki Murakami's writing style is really fascinating and I will most definitely read more of his books in the future.
Maybe I will even reread this one because I can imagine that it adds a lot to the book if I already know what I have to expect. I probably have missed al lot of hints at the beginning because I was just confused and didn't grasp the meaning of sentences that would make sense to me now.

I absolutely recommend reading books by Haruki Murakami, although perhaps it would be easier to start with a shorter book.

Zwei Lückenfüller ...

Ich lese gerade 1Q84, was ja ein absoluter Wälzer ist und da ich es in den nächsten Tagen wahrscheinlich nicht schaffe, es zu Ende zu lesen, ist hier ein kleiner "Lückenfüller".
Denn ich habe zwei neue Bücher!



Das erste habe ich aus einer spontanen Eingebung heraus bestellt: "Animal Farm" von George Orwell. Ich habe letztes Jahr "1984" gelesen und war von dem Stil sehr angetan, weshalb ich jetzt nicht mehr widerstehen konnte und auch nicht wollte.


Und das andere Buch war ein Schnapper bei Thalia, denn ich habe "Der Wolkenatlas" von David Mitchell als Mängelexemplar entdeckt.

Zu guter Letzt muss ich noch meinen größten Traum im Moment loswerden, denn ich liebäugele schon seit längerer Zeit mit einem allseits bekannten Regal (Stichwort "Billy"). Ich bin schon regelrecht verzweifelt, weil ich kein Regal in meinem Zimmer habe und meine Schätze sich somit nicht ständig in Sichtweite befinden.
Außerdem ist das derzeitige behelfsmäßige Bücherregal nicht sonderlich groß, was bedeutet, dass ich meine Bücher mittlerweile auf jedem Brett in zwei Reihen stellen muss und darüber hinaus noch welche obenauf liegen.

Ich bin total unzufrieden damit, wie es jetzt ist und ich denke, es dauert nicht mehr lange, bis ich aus lauter Frust diesem Streben nachgebe.
